USD 418 teachers reported for duty Monday with a kick-off meeting with Superintendent Mark Crawford, among others, at the McPherson High School Little Theater.

“I know that a lot of activities [Monday] were related to professional development and curriculum alignment with the elementary close reading with our high school and secondary staff,” Crawford said. “Those close reading techniques are a very, very important part of our Kansas College and Career Ready Standards.”

All in all, Crawford called it an excellent day.

“I think that [USD 418 Director of Instruction] Angie [McDonald] and the principals did a great job of putting this together,” Crawford said. “It's a lot of work, but it was an excellent day. And I know the teachers are going to be glad to get into the classrooms and get that work day under their belt.”

The first day of classes in USD 418 is Thursday, which is a half day for grades 1-5 and orientation for grades six and nine. Everyone Grades 1-12, as well as half-day kindergarten, will have class on Friday.

Around the county, the first day of class for Smoky Valley is Thursday, Inman begins classes on Friday, Canton-Galva starts Aug. 20 and Moundridge on Sept. 1.
