The annual Battle of the Badges blood drive is coming up later this month in McPherson.
McPherson Fire Chief Jeff Deal says the drive is one of the biggest of the year for the Red Cross.
“This is their second largest blood drive all year long,” Deal said. “They are very dependent on the Battle of the Badges to bring in as much blood as possible. So we will be pursuing this will all vigor over the next couple of weeks.”
In addition to the fire department, the McPherson Police Department and EMS personnel will be seeking both your blood donation and pledge of support.
“We do encourage everybody to take the opportunity, specifically at this time of the year, to come out and donate,” Deal said. “Once again, I would prefer if you would vote for the fire department, but, more importantly, I really would hope that everybody would come out and donate.”
The Battle of the Badges drives normally ensures that the Red Cross has enough blood on the shelves to last them the year.
“Fire, law enforcement and EMS units know firsthand how important it is to have blood readily available for emergencies,” Jan Hale, communications manager of Central Plains Blood Services Region, said. “By hosting this blood drive, they are helping ensure that blood is on the shelves before it is needed.”
The Battle of the Badges will be held Aug. 24 from noon until 6 p.m. and August 25 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Appointments can be made by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor app, going to www.redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-733-2767.
