Area dairy producers can now sign up for the Diary Margin Protection program from the USDA.

“The voluntary program established by the 2014 Farm Bill provides financial assistance to participating diary operations where the margin...the difference between the price of milk and feed costs falls between the coverage level selected by the farmer,” McPherson County Farm Service Agency Agent Michael Westerman said.

The payments for the program are based on an operation's historical production.

“An operation's historical will increase by 2.61 percent in 2016 if the operation participated in 2015, providing a stronger saftey net,” Westerman said.

Sign-up for the Dairy Margin Protection program continues through Sept. 30 for coverage in 2016.
