LINDSBORG — Bethany College’s soccer teams kicked off their seasons on Saturday by being swept at home by Baker University in shutout fashion.
The Wildcat women erupted for six second-half goals to key an 8-0 victory.
“We were hurting today with some key players injured," first-year Bethany coach John Markey said. "Mix that with a Baker side that looked good and are rightfully receiving Top 25 votes and you get a tough situation for our side. I was very proud of the girls' effort, though, they fought hard until the last whistle."
The Baker men scored a goal in each half to come away with a 2-0 success despite 11 saves by Bethany goalie Jose Sanchez.
“"I have the utmost respect for Baker as a team and as a program, and for the first time out I thought we played well, but we have some things defensively we need to correct," Bethany head coach Shane Taylor said. "By that point (when Baker scored their first goal) I think they deserved a goal, we were under pressure most of the first half and they finally put one in."
