McPherson High’s girls tennis team, which finished second in the state last year, starts the 2015 season ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association.

The Bullpups spent last season ranked No. 1 before finishing second to Independence at the state tournament.

The Bulldogs open this year ranked No. 2.

Buhler, which returns its state championship doubles team, is ranked No. 3, followed by Coffeyville and Winfield. Others receiving votes are Miege, Hayden and Wellington.

Hesston, which was fifth in Class 3A last year, is the preseason No. 2 team in Class 3-2-1A behind defending champion Wichita Collegiate. It remains to be seen if Collegiate will remain in Class 3-2-1A as its enrollment is always on the border line. The classifications come out in late September.
