The Traffic Stop: Pedestrian Right of Way

(Standard Traffic Ordinance #64 & KSA 8-1533. Find the exact wording here:tinyurl.com/otgwlup)

Loose meaning: Drivers "shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to...yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk."

And while pedestrians have an obligation to cross in a way which does not "constitute an immediate hazard," drivers bear the burden of being aware of and watchful for those who enter the street.

Essentially, every corner is a crosswalk whether it is indicated by paint, a sign, or a SLOW, STOP, & YIELD -EVERY time.

Failure to do so is a moving violation. In McPherson, the fine is $60, plus $75 Municipal Court Cost.

The Traffic Stop appears on Tuesdays to address topics of traffic enforcement in the City of McPherson. The Traffic Section of Patrol Bureau organizes the Traffic Stop and welcomes suggestions on topics to address.
