State legislators have begun calling for school districts to look at their operating efficiency in order to save costs.
USD 418 is one district giving consideration into having an efficiency and effectiveness review and Superintendent Mark Crawford suggested to the McPherson school board Monday evening enlisting Emporia State University's Center for Innovation and School Leadership.
Crawford said the same group conducted a similar review of USD 418 in 2006.
“They brought individuals into the district,” Crawford said. “There were surveys. They typically bring in a curriculum expert, they bring in a transportation and food service expert. A business manager expert. They look at all the main components of the operation of the school district. The process takes a few months.”
Crawford was in favor of contacting the Center and undergoing the review.
“I've seen this review done before,” he said. “I think it's an excellent review. The climate currently, the political process is pretty highly critical of school district efficiency. This will give us a fresh set of eyes and a good system to give us some feedback.”
Crawford also noted that the review wouldn't cost the district anything, as the funds for such an overview were set aside by the state legislature in 2004.
No action was taken by the board, though they did indicate they were in favor of Crawford moving forward with setting up a review.
