IOLA — Miranda Clark Ulrich and Michael Janzer set the pace for the McPherson College women’s and men’s cross country teams, respectively, as the Bulldogs opened their season Friday competing in the Kings Sandwich Classic, hosted by Allen County Community College.
Clark Ulrich ran 17:04.96 to lead the women and Janzer had a time of 16:33.52 to key the men. Normally the women run a 5K and the men an 8K, but with this being early in the season it was a 4K for the women and 5K for the men.
"I was pleased with how the team handled some tough course conditions,” Mac coach Cameron Magnall said. "It was good to knock off some rust on a shorter course against some strong competition. I'm excited to carry our momentum into our next meet in two weeks."
Taylor Dreiling was second for the women in 17:17.01. Laura Gibson (17:37.89), Lauren Wankum (17:53.32), Savana Cross (17:54.19), Erika Doty (18:49.49), Amanda Lolling (20:49.76) and Damaje Markham (22:23.15) rounded out the Mac competitors.
Dixon Cooney came in second for the men in 16:58.95 and was followed by a pair of newcomers in Jerod Fuller (17.24.93) and Felix Cervantes (17.28.89). Kurt Katzdorn was the final scoring Bulldog with his time of 17:37.65. Gavin Hightower (17:56.46), Gustavo Pelayo (18:27.81), Jonathan Dominguez (18:31.40)b and Karl Timmerman (22:34.16) rounded out the competitors.
