INMAN — Moundridge’s volleyball team shook off an early pool-play loss to advance to the finals of Saturday’s Inman Invitational, eventually losing to Remington in the championship match.

The Wildcats were 2-1 in pool play, with wins over Cedar Vale-Dexter and Fairfield. The loss came to arch-rival Inman in a thrilling three-setter.

The Wildcats were taken to the limit by Sedgwick in the semifinals, winning the third set in overtime, 26-24. They fell to Remington in straight sets in the finals.

“I was really proud of the team for earning second place in the tournament,” Moundridge coach Kelsi Chisholm said. “Although we have six seniors, I would not consider us an experienced varsity squad. We have some girls playing varsity for the first time as seniors, juniors and sophomores. We weren't sure what to expect, but as the day went our confidence grew and we increased our communication and court movement.”

Chisholm thought the Wildcats were at their best in the semifinals.

“Our best match of the day was against Sedgwick even though the final scores wouldn't indicate as such,” she said. “I thought both our offense and defense contributed to us winning that match. Sedgwick is a very good team and will be a consistent threat in the Heart of America League this season.”

Of course, the match with Inman lived up to its reputation as the two schools always provide their fans with lively entertainment.

“The biggest surprise of the day was Inman,” Chisholm said. “They served us very aggressively and although I thought our serve receive did well for the most part, Inman was able to get us out of system more than what we were comfortable with. They are scrappy and have some hitters who can put the ball away. It was a good match between two familiar foes and we hope to get them next time at our place Sept. 8.”

Inman had gone 3-0 in pool play, but lost a three-set tussle to Remington in the semifinals. It then was defeated in straight sets in the third-place match by Sedgwick.
