McPherson College will kick off the football season on Saturday while also saying 'thank you' to McPherson County's emergency first responders.
McPherson College Athletic Director Andrew Ehling says its part of an effort from the college to bridge the gap to the greater McPherson community, which will include different efforts for each home game throughout the fall season.
“And this is one of the first things we wanted to do,” Ehling said. “Let's kick off the season with Service Saturday and involve [the Department of Auto Restoration] with this mini-car show. It's going to be some select cars that auto restoration students have restored and will show off on that day.”
The College is offering free admission for first responder employees and their families to Saturday's football season opener against NAIA No. 22 Doane College, which kicks off at 7 p.m. at McPherson Stadium. That includes EMS personnel, police, sheriff, fire and 911 dispatch.
In addition, the McPherson College Business Club will be holding a tailgate starting at 4 p.m.
“We're going to ask for donations for the meal,” Ehling said. “The donations are going to be split 50-50. The Business Club will get part of that, which goes towards their big trip every year that they go on and explore a business somewhere in the United States.”
The donations to first responders will be sent to the the McPherson County Community Foundation, who will apply the money towards the purchase and maintenance of Automated External Defibrillators.
The CARS Club auto show will be set up starting at 2 p.m. in the parking lots to the southwest of the stadium, with root beer floats to be offered for a suggested id="mce_marker" freewill donation.
