There’s nothing quite like opening night.
“The first game is always exciting,” said McPherson High boys soccer coach Chris Adrian, whose team hosts Mulvane tonight at McPherson Stadium. “It feels like we have been practicing for an eternity already and the boys are eager to play a competitive game. We are completely focused on Mulvane and want to come out and execute our game plan tonight.”
The JV game is set for 6 p.m., with the varsity starting approximately 7:30. MHS routed the Wildcats 11-0 in last year’s season opener.
The Bullpups are ranked No. 5 this week in Class 4-1A. They are coming off an 11-6-2 season, which included a trip to the state playoffs, where they came up one win short of making the Final Four.
With only one senior on that team, Ethan VanDorn, the Bullpups return a wealth of experience, which has accelerated practices since so many players already know the system.
“Our attack has been looking really strong the last few days and the defense looks solid,” Adrian said. “It’s the first game of the season for both teams and we want to come out and show that we want to pick up where we left off from last season.”
The Bullpups return nine players who earned some type of postseason honors last year. Leading scorer Andric McGill, the energy-charged Patrick Munsey and Jamison Stout all made first-team AVCTL.
The Bullpups also are home on Thursday to take on a Hays team that they’ll turn around and play next week in the opening game of the Maize South Invitational.
