Youth will be served for the McPherson High girls cross country team when it opens the season Thursday at Concordia.

“One of my top girls will be sitting out for Thursday with an injury, Michelle Carrillo, and we hope to have her back by Hesston, so my Top 7 will consist of one senior and six freshmen with MaryAnn Wurm, Katie Bahr and MacKenzie Becker leading the pack,” MHS coach Gentry Nixon said. “Rounding out the girls' varsity are Hannah Hageman, Katelyn Beam, Maggie Leaf and J'anae Spaich.

Nixon said some help could be on the way.

“Look for Brianna Bradley's name in the future,” she said of the sophomore. “She started late, but she's going to make herself known this season.”

An injury also could hamper the boys’ team for this first meet as expected mainstay Wyatt Hedlund could be sidelined.

“Wyatt might be sitting out as he has been battling an injury, too,” Nixon said.

Chris Kirchner and Tyler Timson will lead the way, and a plus is the return of Spencer Steinert.

“We look for Spencer, who took off a year and then came back to us, to be a strong contender on Thursday as well,” Nixon said. “One newcomer, Isaiah Moyer, is right up there on the varsity squad. Rounding out the boys’ varsity team are returners Paxton Leaf and Tate Johnson.”

The meet begins at 4:15 p.m.
