Bethany College’s volleyball team was picked below McPherson College in the KCAC preseason poll, but it finished above the Bulldogs in the conference-opening match on Wednesday at the Sport Center.
The Swedes won in four sets, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-21. It had been more than a year since the Swedes had won a KCAC match as their last success came on Nov. 2, 2013.
For McPherson College, it was its first loss after two wins.
Bethany was led in kills by Kim Stringer with 15, while Nikita Nelson had 12 and Carli Vahshotz added 11. Leila Whaley led in assists with 29, while Conner Stolley’s 20 digs were tops, while Nelson had 15.
“It was a really big win for us, for what they went through last year, to take this first match in four games was a big step for our team," Bethany first-year head coach Cheri Lindsay said. "Having four players with an even amount of kills shows that we have versatile setters and that our passing was on tonight. We had power all over the net and what more could a coach ask for."
McPherson College lost despite a 24-kill night from Taryn Hill. Rhianna Smith led in assists with 24 and Emily Warner paced the way in digs with 27.
