BUHLER — McPherson High’s ninth-grade volleyball team emerged with a 2-1 record on Thursday as it opened its season in quad action hosted by Buhler.
MHS needed three sets to defeat Rose Hill (19-25, 25-23, 25-20) before losing in straight sets to Buhler (20-25, 23-25). Against El Dorado, MHS came away with 25-18, 25-14 decisions.
“We were very excited to play our first match against Rose Hill,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “They were a very competitive team with great setting and blocking on the front row and quality passing. Our girls came back after a first-set loss, to win the next two close sets. Our passing on the back row from (Michaela) Bowers, (Chelsea) Stoppel, (Lauren) Hein and (Rachel) Janzen was fantastic. And our offense and defense both ran well.
“Game two we came up short in two sets against Buhler. We could not adjust to the deep balls in this game from the serve and hitters. Unlike the first game, our bad passing pulled the setters off the net and we couldn't get quality sets to our hitters.
“Game three against El Dorado we pulled our passing back to the setters and were able to move into some different rotations. We have some work to do on serve receive and serve location, as well as setting to our hitters consistently. But overall I was happy with our performance tonight.”
The Bullpups go to Salina South on Saturday.
