ABILENE — Smoky Valley’s volleyball team won two of three matches during a quad Thursday hosted by Abilene.
The Vikings are now 5-3 on the year.
They defeated Thomas More Prep (22-25, 25-21, 25-22) and Concordia (25-17, 25-19), but lost to Abilene (18-25, 23-25).
“I couldn't be more proud of how the girls competed against three tough teams,” Viking coach Allison O’Neil said. “We have shown growth from where we were last year even this early in the season. For us to continue to be successful our serve receive will have to improve."
Especially gratifying, O’Neil said, was to defeat Thomas More Prep, which ended the Vikings’ season last year in the sub-state championship match. She also was pleased with how well the team competed against Abilene, which is expected to be among the best teams in Class 4A Division I this season.
Smoky Valley plays on Tuesday at Sterling. Powerhouse Hesston will also be in the triangular. The Swathers already are 9-0 on the season.
