SALINA — McPherson’s eighth-grade football team split on the day with Salina South, losing the A-game 22-0 and winning the B-game, 12-6.
“As coaches, we were very proud of the way our young men represented McPherson,” Bullpup coach TJ Jackson said. “Through the highs and lows of our first games of the year they had great attitudes, good sportsmanship and gave great effort.”
In the A-game, Tyson Gottwald was 5 of 9 for 93 yards through the air. Landon Frantz had 23 yards on eight carries. Mason Thrash was the top receiver with four snags for 33 yards and Kvon Richardson caught a 60-yard bomb.
Thrash was a defensive warrior with six solo tackles, three of them for losses. He also had two assists and a sack. Alex Perkins had five tackles and a fumble recovery.
In the B-game, Will Powers rushed for 63 yards and a TD and also was 4 of 5 passing for 77 yards. Trenton Stecklein had four catches for 48 yards, one for a score. Powers had five tackles and a fumble recovery to lead the defense.
