McPherson’s seventh-grade football team opened its season in impressive fashion here Thursday with a 28-14 doubling of Salina South.
“For being our first game, the kids played really well,” MMS coach Brandon Labertew said. “Our offensive line of Dylan Rinker, Drew Hanken, Jonah Scott, Wyatt Eisenbarth, Blade Anderson, Aaron Handlin and Dakota Istas really dominated a large Salina South defensive line.”
Offensively, it was ground-and-pound as the Bullpups powered their way to 209 yards rushing.
Aaron Powell scored two rushing TDs and caught a scoring pass from Max Alexander. Brycen Labertew accounted for the other score.
Alexander also ran for a 2-pointer and hooked up with Eli Pyle for another.
Devin Frantz had a nice game on defense with three tackles and an interception. Pyle added a fumble recovery.
The team plays Thursday at Newton.
