McPherson High’s soccer team and Hays will hook up for the second time in less than a week today when they meet in the first round of the Maize South Invitational.
Game time is 4 p.m.
The teams met last Thursday in McPherson, with five Andric McGill goals leading the Bullpups to a 6-2 rout. Hays actually took an early 1-0 lead in that game before the Bullpups stormed back with four quick goals and led 4-2 at the half. McGill scored twice in the second half for insurance.
Should the Bullpups win, that would most likely set up a 4 p.m. showdown Thursday with Salina South, which like MHS has scored 16 goals in its two victories this season. Oddly, both teams are state ranked, yet on the same side of the bracket.
South is expected to have little trouble in its first game against Life Prep, which actually will be played on Wednesday.
Thomas More Prep drew a first-round bye and automatically plays in Thursday’s 6 p.m. semifinals. Maize South and Wichita Independent play today’s second game at 6 p.m., with the winner taking on TMP.
The final day of play is Saturday.
