SALINA — McPherson Middle School’s volleyball teams competed Tuesday in triangular action at Salina South, with Newton the third team.

Here is a summary:

• 8th A Girls •

The Bullpups played well, but lost to both teams in straight sets. They lost to Newton (25-22, 13-25, 11-15) and South (20-25, 25-18, 5-15).

“The girls made progress tonight, finally winning our first two sets of the season,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “However, we still haven't been able to put together a complete match, as we lost both matches in three sets. We had too many unforced errors that really hurt our momentum. I was proud that the girls didn't give up when they were down and kept fighting until the end.”

MMS lost to Newton (4-25, 11-25), but defeated South (25-22, 25-13) for a 1-1 night.

“Our first match against Newton, we were very timid and lacked confidence,” MMS coach Aimee McDaniel said. “The second match against Salina was much better. We were ready to play and showed a lot of confidence and determination. We also served well.”

• 7th A Girls •

The Bullpups split, with the win coming against Salina South (25-20, 25-14). Newton was a 25-22, 28-26 winner.

“We played well against South, but had too many missed serves,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “Our serving improved against Newton in a hard-fought match. We just couldn't quite pull out the win in Set 2. We missed some serves at key moments and had some unforced errors. Overall, I was proud of the fight the girls showed. On the night, Taylor Casebeer, Hailey Henson and Megan Lulloff did a great job serving. Casebeer and Olivia Morgan had some nice digs in the Newton match.”

It was a 2-0 night for the Bullpups, with wins over South (22-25, 25-9, 15-9) and Newton (21-25, 25-7, 15-7).

“The girls played great tonight, we made some simple mistakes in the first set of each game, but came back strong with our serving,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “They communicated well on the court and we look forward to the rest of our season.”
