The weather was again threatening, but this time they were able to get it in.

McPherson High’s JV Invitational Tennis Tournament had been halted on Tuesday after just a few matches, but the bad weather went around on Thursday, with Goddard Eisenhower taking the championship with 16 points.

The host Bullpups were second with 14, while Andover (12) and Hutchinson (11) also were in contention. Other scores were Campus (5), Elyria Christian (4) and Newton (2).

The Bullpups dominated in doubles, with the No. 1 team of Sophie Smith and Ashley Achilles taking first with a 3-0 record, which is exactly the same record and place of No. 2 entry Jessie Kynaston and Madison Schmidt.

Caitlin Faulk was 1-2 for fourth at No. 2 singles, while Daphane Carrillo was 1-3 for sixth at No. 1.

“They continue to improve with every match,” MHS coach Tyler Brown said. “Several of our girls are starting to figure out how to win. Some of our girls got their first win this meet and a few of our others continue to win.

“Ashley Achilles is looking really good, taking first in her first meet at No. 1 singles and first again today while playing No. 1 doubles with Sophie Smith.  Other girls that really stood out were Jessie Kynaston and Madison Schmidt, who also took first while playing No. 2 doubles.  The nice thing to see is several of these girls are bringing home the gold in their division and they are underclassmen, so there is a lot of upside to their career. While Daphane Carrillo and Caitlin Faulk may not have won their division, we continue to see rapid improvements in their game.”
