WELLINGTON — McPherson’s ninth-grade volleyball team didn’t travel this far just to lose.
Instead, the Bullpups dominated the field, going 3-0 in the quad.
MHS lost its first set to Wellington (19-25), but bounced back for 28-26, 15-5 triumphs.
“Serving errors got the best of us in this match at 9,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “I was proud of our effort in set two as we fought hard for the win at 28-26. Our setter, Addie Fitzmorris, went down in the second set with a twisted ankle, which forced us to make some changes to the lineup. We finally adjusted to that change in set 3. We did not play in system well throughout the match, but we will take the win.”
The Bullpups then swept Circle, 25-16, 25-22.
“Chelsea Stoppel and Kari Ellet both had great hitting games on the strong side,” Fitzmorris said. “Again, service errors hurt us. We were however able to change the lineup and work on some different rotations. Our back-row passing was much improved in this match. Michaela Bowers and Stoppel led the team in digs and passing off the serve. Setters Addie Fitzmorris and Kallie Jost joined together for 14 assists and 11 digs.”
MHS completed the sweep with a 25-15, 25-21 success against Mulvane.
“Our passing against Mulvane was fantastic,” Fitzmorris said. “Lauren Hein, our libero, led the way with 12 digs. Hein and Michaela Bowers joined together for 17 quality serve receives. Passing always sets the tone for the rest of the game, which allowed us to not only hit well, but utilize the short set in the middle. Michaela Bowers had a kill off a quick up the middle which was one highlight of the game.”
MHS is now 9-2 and stays on the road next Thursday to Clearwater.
