MAIZE — After so many near-misses, the McPherson eighth-grade volleyball team broke through for its first victory during Saturday’s Maize Invitational.

MMS won the seventh-place game over Derby North (25-17, 25-27, 15-8).

Earlier in the day, the Bullpups lost to Buhler (13-25, 16-25), Maize (10-25, 11-25) and Salina Lakewood (23-25, 24-26).

“We finally got our first win of the season and the girls had to work hard for it,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “I was proud that they have continued to improve and play together despite feeling frustrated with not being able to win the close matches we have had this season.”

Now 1-7, MMS goes to Derby Monday for a triangular that also includes Salina South.
