DERBY — The McPherson seventh-grade football program has only been in existence for a short time, but Thursday’s 28-26 road victory in overtime over Derby may go down as the best in school history.
Both teams were 2-0 heading into the game and Derby recently destroyed a decent Newton team by more than 40 points.
The Bullpups led the majority of the game before Derby forced overtime.
In the extra session, Derby scored first, but did not convert to take a 26-20 lead. MMS answered on a touchdown by Avante Wade to tie the game and then it won it on a pass from Max Alexander to Aaron Powell.
That capped a huge day for Powell, who scored three times on two rushes and a pass reception. He also had another 2-pointer earlier in the game.
The Bullpups had nice balance as they ran for 147 yards and passed for 108. They also recovered three fumbles, one each by Powell, Dylan Rinker and Brycen Labertew.
MMS coach Brandon Labertew praised the entire team as the Bullpups defeated a Derby team rich in talent and depth.
The Bullpups will try to complete a sweep of the Derby schools when they host Derby North on Thursday in another Pioneer League game.
