SALINA — McPherson’s seventh-grade volleyball B-team started the day strong Saturday, but waned toward the end and finished in fourth place out of eight schools in the Salina Lakewood Invitational.

The Bullpups went 3-0 in pool play with wins over Andover Central (25-22, 25-13), Derby North (25-11, 25-11) and Salina South (27-29, 25-17, 15-9).

In bracket play, the Bullpups lost to Maize South (14-25, 20-25) and Andover Central in the rematch (16-25, 20-25). Those were the first two losses of the year for the team.

“The girls had a long day of volleyball, playing five matches in a row,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “They did awesome in pool play, placing first in their pool. They communicated well and worked hard as a team. The final two games were rough for us. You could tell the girls were getting tired and we lost our motivation. Our serving struggled throughout these games and we defeated ourselves.”

MMS comes right back to Salina non Monday to play Lakewood and Hutchinson on Monday.
