The Traffic Stop: Driving on the right side of the roadway

By MPD Officer Mo Hawkinson
September 23, 2015

(Standard Traffic Ordinance No. 38 & Kansas Statute Annotated 8-1514)

Loose meaning: Every road has a center –even those not marked by a center line. When a parked car on the side of the roadway makes it necessary to drive left of center, the passing driver shall yield the right-of-way to all oncoming vehicles near enough to make passing the parked car dangerous.

We’ve attached some diagrams for your reference. In McPherson, the fine for driving left of center is $60, plus $75 Municipal.

“The Traffic Stop” appears on Tuesdays to address topics of traffic enforcement in the City of McPherson. The Traffic Section of Patrol Bureau organizes “The Traffic Stop” and welcomes suggestions on topics to address.

Please send your traffic enforcement questions unrelated to the current topic or topic suggestions to MPD via private message on Facebook.
