LEAVENWORTH — Central Christian College’s women’s soccer team is on fire.
Nikki Neal’s goal in the second overtime Tuesday, off a pass by Krystina Stackhouse, gave the Lady Tigers a thrilling 3-2 victory over a Saint Mary team that entered the game with a 5-1 record.
Makenzie Woods, off a corner kick by Isabel Sierra, scored the first CCC goal, but the Spires scored twice before intermission to take a 2-1 lead.
Stackhouse scored the tying goal, which was set up by Neal. Then, of course, they reversed roles in the second overtime, as the Lady Tigers are now a splendid 6-2 on the year.
“On a hot day, we found a way to grind out a win against a much-improved St. Mary's team," CCC coach Scott Fogarty said. "Both teams were miles ahead of where they were last year. After scoring an early goal, we had trouble breaking down their defense despite unleashing twice as many shots. It wouldn't have been a problem except we conceded twice. We left it to late, scoring the tying goal with only a few minutes left. Thankfully that goal lifted our spirits and gave us momentum in extra time."
Central is home Saturday to entertain Texas College. Match time is 6 p.m.
• Saint Mary men 3, Central 0 — The Tigers found themselves down 2-0 at the half and never mounted any semblance of a comeback.
“It is very difficult to be positive about tonight's game,” said CCC coach Aaron Hoxie, whose team is now 3-5. “We did not do anything that we worked on leading to the match. It is very difficult to play when we can't get ourselves going. That being said, we missed four 1 v 1s in the first half and gifted them the first two goals. All credit to them because they worked incredibly hard, were opportunistic and executed their game plan to a T."
CCC hosts Texas College in an 8 p.m. game Saturday.
