WINFIELD — McPherson High volleyball coach Christy Doile probably was wondering what in the heck was going on.

The Bullpups, riding an 11-match winning streak, found themselves down 7-0 to Winfield on Tuesday.

Then reality took over as MHS righted the ship for a 25-14, 25-19 victory. MHS also defeated Rose Hill in a rematch of last week’s thrilling dual, 25-17, 25-10.

“Collectively as a team, minus the 0-7 start versus Winfield, I was very proud of the girls’ effort and execution,” Doile said.

Highlights of the night, according to Doile, were holding Rose Hill to 10 points in the second set, Mandi Cooks’ play in the middle, the team’s serve receive percentage (the best of the year), being aced only twice, and a tremendous jump set by Brooke Schrag that set up a smash by Cooks.

Megan Pedersen had another tremendous day with 20 kills and 25 assists and had her highest hitting percentage of the season. Magan Alexander had 15 digs and nine kills, while Katlyn Ruth added eight kills.

Schrag recorded 21 assists. Addie Simon (18) and Ashtyn Schieferecke had good nights in digs (18 and 12, respectively). Cooks was again menacing at the net with a team-high four blocks.

The MHS JVs split, defeating Winfield (25-18, 25-19), but losing to Rose Hill in three (25-19, 21-25, 10-15).

MHS’ varsity has a huge tournament coming up on Saturday when it goes to Newton.
