McPherson High cross country coach Gentry Nixon has definite goals for her team when it hosts its annual invitational meet on Thursday at Rolling Acres.
“My main goal for Thursday is for all my runners to run a PR (personal record),” Nixon said. “If we can do that on our course, that's a win in my book. That being said, I would like to see both varsity teams in the Top 3.”
There will be no shortage of talent in the field as the runners take to one of the state’s toughest layouts.
“We have some good competition coming,” she said. “Hays has been strong on both the girls' and boys' side. El Dorado has a really strong boys' team this year and Buhler's girls have looked really strong as well.”
Other teams in the field are Hutchinson, Maize, Maize South, Salina Central and Salina South.
Nixon hasn’t had her full team together most of the season due to injuries and illness. Katie Bahr, one of the top girl runners, has been out with walking pneumonia, while Wyatt Hedlund has been ailing on the boys’ side.
It’s a full day as the middle school race starts at 3 p.m., with the high school races beginning at 4:30.
Here is the schedule:
