GYPSUM — There appears to be no stopping Smoky Valley’s Calvin Shannon and the Viking cross country team.
With yet another championship performance by Shannon, along with Top 10 finishes by Logan Windholz and Josh Peterson, the Vikings won the Southeast of Saline Invitational on Tuesday.
Shannon ran a 17:04 to win by 12 seconds. Windholz was third in 17:59 and Peterson was seventh in 18:36.
Other finishers were Austin Lustfield (12th in 18:58), Isaac Peterson (16th in 19:12), Jackson Menke (26th in 19:54) and Carter Couchman (20:57). The Top 25 medaled.
The Vikings’ 36 points were easily ahead of the 51 scored by Halstead.
Smoky Valley’s Katie Adam continued her successful season by placing third in 21:34. Also medaling was Hailey Priddy, who was 25th in 23:49.
Other finishers were Maggie Lambert (27th in 24:01), Sophia Peterson (28th in 24:08), Cailey Cornett (49th in 26:48), Kaleigh Salzman (55th in 27:25) and Christine Richter (61st in 28:43.
The Vikings were fourth as a team with 99 points, with Southeast of Saline winning with 52.
“We had another great day of competing at Southeast of Saline,” Viking coach Holly Lindquist said. “The kids are working together in the races to make each other better. I like the efforts by most of the runners. We were missing a Top 5 varsity boy as well as a Top 5 varsity girl today. The boys definitely stepped it up a notch to fill the void. The girls were somewhat affected by this in the team score, but I feel like we ran to our potential. Our goal is to continue at this caliber, but to be very careful of injury as we creep closer to postseason."
