NEWTON — A strong start dissipated into a somewhat disappointing finish for McPherson High’s volleyball team on Saturday in the high-powered Newton Invitational.

The Bullpups stormed to four straight victories to start the day, but then lost to old nemesis Newton in the semifinals. That was followed by a straight-sets loss to Goddard Eisenhower in the third-place match, a team the Bullpups had defeated earlier in the day.

MHS opened with wins over Wichita Heights (25-14, 25-15), Andale (18-25, 25-19, 25-20), Andover Central (25-15, 25-22) and Goddard Eisenhower (25-23, 28-26).

That pushed MHS’ winning streak to 17, but Newton, which had handed the Bullpups their only defeat in the season opener, once again knocked off the ‘Pups in a three-setter after MHS won the opening set (25-19, 16-25, 18-25).

MHS never recovered from that tough loss, losing 13-25, 18-25 to Goddard Eisenhower.

Newton defeated Hays for the championship.
