GREAT BEND — McPherson High’s JV volleyball team won a couple of crucial three-set matches Saturday on its way to the championship of the Great Bend Invitational.
One of those wins came against arch-rival Newton (25-21, 25-27, 15-11). The other three-setter was against Great Bend (25-10, 19-25, 15-6).
MHS only needed straight sets against Hays (25-22, 25-21), Scott City (25-15, 25-15) and Dodge City (26-24, 25-11) as it was 5-0 on the day.
“We had a great day. Last weekend we lost some really close matches, this weekend we won them,” MHS coach Diane Marshall said. “One of the things we have been focusing on is making our serves. We did a great job this weekend serving 96 percent. Jaycee Burghart and Maggie Gara were on fire with 21 aces between them. Sydney Mossman and Elle Barrett hit well for us with 33 and 32 kills, respectively, and our blockers had 39 stuff blocks on the day. Libero Elisabeth Evans suffered an injury early in the day and didn't play the last three matches, but Bailea Crist stepped up and ran the defense well in her place. I think the best part of the day for the girls was having fans from other teams tell us that we had good chemistry and were fun to watch.”
The 5-0 day pushed the Bullpups’ record to 12-4 on the season.
