DERBY — McPherson Middle School’s volleyball team won and lost on Monday in a triangular hosted by Derby North.

The Bullpups toppled the hosts in straight sets (25-18, 25-19), but lost to Newton in two sets (14-25, 18-25).

“I felt like the girls played relaxed and had fun in the Derby match,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We did struggle with serving a little. Against Newton, we got down and could not find a rhythm. Communication and teamwork are areas we need to continue to work on.”

The split left the Bullpups at 8-7 on the season.

Meanwhile, the B-team had it on cruise control the entire night to improve its record to 14-2.

The Bullpups thrashed Derby North (25-6, 25-8) and Newton (25-17, 25-7).

“We had great serving from Ashtyn Heim, Autumn Muehler, Abby Hipp and Melissa Mintzer,” Bohme said. “Lillia Diggs and Ashtyn passed the ball well, and net play was solid tonight. The girls did a nice job of using three hits and setting the ball up.”

The Bullpups are home Oct. 5 for a triangular against Salina Lakewood and Derby.
