McPherson’s eighth-grade volleyball team got back on the winning track here Monday as it hosted a triangular.

The Bullpups defeated Derby North (25-15, 25-13), but lost to Newton (25-9, 22-25, 14-16).

“The girls played one of their best matches of the season against Derby North,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “They had good serving and passing the first match. Cassie Cooks was big with three stuff blocks and 11 kills on the night. In the second match, the girls were still on fire the first set against Newton, but were unable to finish the match and fell to Newton in three sets.”

MMS is now 2-13.

The B-team also split, routing Derby North (25-11, 25-16), but losing to Newton (18-25, 28-26, 13-15).

“The girls had a lot of fun playing tough and competitive volleyball with Newton,” MMS coach Aimee McDaniel said.

The Bullpups are now 4-10.

Next MMS action is Monday at Salina Lakewood, with Derby the third team in the triangular.
