McPherson High’s JV tennis team took third place here Thursday in the AVCTL Championships that included both Divisions III and IV.

Winfield won the title with 63 points, while Wellington was second with 58.

MHS was third with 51, followed by Wichita Collegiate (35), Circle (25), El Dorado (24), Augusta (12) and Buhler (12).

MHS’ Sophie Smith and Ashley Achilles were second at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. The No. 1 doubles team of Madison Schmidt and Jessie Kynaston took third, while Caitlin Faulk and Daphne Carrillo placed fifth at No. 2.

“Our JV had a tremendous year. I’m extremely proud of our girls today,” MHS coach Tyler Brown said. “Both our singles girls found their way to the finals, which was outstanding. Our doubles also had a great day. Our No. 1s Madison and Jessie upset the No. 3 seed Wichita Collegiate to make it to the semifinals where again we ran into a tough Winfield team. But they finished strong beating Augusta for third.”

Brown added his No. 2 team had a tough draw with the No. 1 seed, but rallied for a pair of wins to win the consolation bracket.
