For McPherson High’s volleyball team, Saturday’s Ottawa Invitational probably will have a stronger field than the actual Class 4A Division I State Tournament.

A powerhouse field that’s chockfull of Class 6A schools awaits the Bullpups, who put their 19-3 record on the line mostly against teams they never compete against during the regular season.

“We are looking forward to the tough competition,” MHS coach Christy Doile said. “If we don't win our pool, we have to try our very best to win second place. They will only take the top second-place finisher to the Final Four.”

The field has a blue color to it — as in Blue Valley schools. Blue Valley North and Blue Valley West should be strong, though Olathe Northwest could be the team to beat, according to Doile.

Other teams include Emporia, Lansing, Rose Hill, Shawnee Mission West, Topeka West, Wichita Heights, Olathe North and the host Cyclones.
