CANTON — In actuality, there were two Canton-Galva Invitational Volleyball Tournaments on Saturday.
There was the one Goessel played in — basically against itself — and then there was the one for second place.
Canton-Galva won the “other” tournament as it turned in an outstanding performance before losing to Class 1A’s top team and expected state champion in the finals. It was the Eagles’ best finish here in many a year.
The Eagles ran off four straight wins before succumbing to the amazing Bluebirds in the finals (9-25, 6-25).
Earlier, C-G had won its pool with wins over Halstead (25-18, 25-23), the Wichita Warriors (25-7, 25-18) and Solomon (25-21, 25-19).
In the semis, the Eagles breezed to 25-5 and 25-14 successes against Sunrise Christian Academy.
By going 4-1 on the weekend, Kaitlyn Bressie’s team continued its turnaround season as it’s now 14-11.
Goessel had defetead Little River (25-10, 25-8), Central Christian (25-9, 25-14) and Sunrise Christian (25-21, 25-10) in pool play, then wiped out Halstead 25-7, 25-10 in the semifinals. The Bluebirds are now 27-0 and have not lost a set this year.
Little River was 0-3 on the day, losing its other matches to Sunrise Christian (26-24, 16-25, 25-21) and Central Christian (17-25, 20-25).
