OTTAWA — At first glance, McPherson High’s fourth-place finish in Saturday’s Ottawa Volleyball Invitational might not seem all that impressive, especially since it finished with a 2-3 record.

But a closer look reveals otherwise.

The Bullpups made the Final Four in the 12-team event that included mostly 6A and 5A schools and several ranked teams.

In pool play, they routed Wyandotte (25-2, 25-4) and defeated Wichita Heights (25-20, 25-19), but lost to Lansing (25-27, 18-25), which is the No. 4-ranked team in Class 5A.

However, MHS was deemed to be the best second-place team of the three pools. That put it in the semis, where it lost to No. 6-ranked Blue Valley North (26-28, 18-25) and then in the third-place match, it once again lost to Lansing (22-25, 22-25).

The second Lansing match gave MHS coach Christy Doile a good feeling coming away from the day as she liked the way her team competed.

“We battled both sets,” she said. “We played with more energy, core values and walked away from the this tournament feeling much better.”

MHS is now 21-6 on the year, with each of the losses coming to state-ranked teams. The Bullpups have lost twice to Newton (No. 4 in 5A) and Lansing, with single losses to Blue Valley North and Goddard Eisenhower (No. 7 in 5A).

MHS is home Tuesday for a triangular with Augusta and El Dorado.
