SALINA — McPherson’s eighth-grade volleyball A-team emerged from Monday’s Salina Lakewood triangular with a split.

The Bullpups defeated Derby (25-21, 20-25, 19-17) in a thrilling three-setter, but lost in straight sets to Lakewood (19-25, 22-5).

“I was super proud of the girls for not giving up against Derby,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We fought off multiple match points and finally came away with the victory. We had strong all-around play by Lakyn Schieferecke and Andrea Sweat on the night. In the second match against Lakewood, we were unable to overcome serving and hitting errors and let an opportunity to upset Lakewood slip away.”

The Bullpups are now 3-14.

The B-team emulated the A-team by defeating Derby (25-18, 25-22), but losing to Lakewood (24-26, 14-25). The Bullpups are now 5-11.

“Against Derby, everyone played well as a team and did a great job being aggressive on the net,” MMS coach Aimee McDaniel said. “Against Lakewood, we fought hard in the first set. The second set they mainly scored off our errors. The girls struggled with shaking off their mistakes and being mentally tough and ready for the next play.”

The Bullpups go to Derby North on Thursday.
