McPherson’s seventh-grade volleyball team won and lost in a triangular it hosted on Monday.
The Bullpups needed the bare minimum to dispatch Derby (25-21, 25-7), but lost to Salina Lakewood (9-25, 21-25).
“It took us a little while to get started in the Derby match after struggling with serve receive, but once we found a rhythm the girls played with a lot of energy,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We did a nice job of attacking the ball and had great teamwork. We could not seem to find that same energy and teamwork in the match against Lakewood. We put together a comeback late in the second set, but fell short. We need to work on our mental toughness.”
MMS is now 9-8 on the season.
The B-team also split, defeating Derby (25-13, 25-14), but lost to Lakewood in a three-setter (20-25, 25-10, 11-15).
“We had a great first game against Derby today,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “The girls were playing well and utilizing all three of their hits to their advantage every time. When we played Lakewood, we fell apart as a team. We did not communicate well and could not get our serves over. We got down in the last set and could not get back up. Moving forward, we need to get back to the basics and work on our serves, passing and working better as a team.”
The loss to Lakewood was only the third of the season as the Bullpups are now 15-3.
The McPherson teams are on the road Thursday to play Derby North.
