ELLSWORTH — Smoky Valley’s cross country team continued its sensational season with a dominating performance on Tuesday in the Ellsworth Invitational as it turned the meet into its own personal showcase.
The Viking boys had five medalists on their way to the team title, including winner Calvin Shannon (17:16) and runner-up Logan Windholz (17:45).
Also medaling were Zach Lott (8th in 18:52), Austin Lustfield (12th in 18:58) and Josh Peterson (13th in 18:59).
Other runners were Isaac Peterson (17th in 19:13) and Carter Couchman (53rd in 22:28).
The Viking girls were first as well and also had five medalists. They were Katie Adam (2nd in 21:52), Maggie Lambert (8th in 23:25), Sophia Peterson (9th in 23:31), Gracie Lott (11th in 23:48) and Cailey Cornett (14th in 24:44). Kaleigh Salzman was 28th in 28:48.
The Smoky JV runners also fared well.
Matthew Ruppert won the boys’ race in 20:36. Other placers were Julian Maldonado (13th in 22:15), Chace Penner (15th in 22:26), Chance Penner (18th in 22:51), Laurence Dahlsten (19th in 22:54) and Geoffrey Tubbs (27th in 23:42).
For the girls, Christine Richert led the way by taking 4th in 27:30. Other runners were Elena Schneider (7th in 30:24) and Alyssa Patrick (11th in 35:42).
“It was a great day for Smoky Valley cross country,” Viking coach Holly Lindquist said. “Our team goals for both the boys and girls teams were to finish in first place. We achieved it. Hailey Priddy and Jackson Menke are both injured and on the varsity squad. But we stepped it up and filled in nicely. I'm excited that we are at this point moving into league and regionals. It's nice to have great confidence going into these higher-stake meets."
