Area riders will take a moment Saturday to remember a fellow cyclist who died three years ago.
“[Pedals for Paul] is an annual ride we do in honor of Paul Ziegler, a McPherson College student who lost his life three years ago in a car-cycling accident,” Brian Lundburg, McPherson College Marketing Director, said.
Zeigler was killed Sept. 23, 2012, after he was hit by an on-coming truck on 18thAvenue that had swerved into Ziegler's path. The initial event was put on to help complete Zeigler's goal of cycling 2,000 miles in one year. That goal was more than surpassed, as riders both in McPherson and around the country logged 3,475 miles. With Ziegler's total of 800 miles when he died, that brought his total to 4,275 miles.
This year's ride, which is part of McPherson College's homecoming, will be held Saturday starting at 8 am. The full route is a 26 mile loop that starts at the circle on Euclid, west to Maxwell and south out of town. There is also a 6 mile shorter loop available for less experienced riders.
There is no entry fee, though donations can be made to the Paul Ziegler Memorial Scholarship Fund.
