Winfield’s freshman football team tied McPherson High late in regulation here Monday, then won it in overtime, 12-6.

Down 6-0 with under a minute left in the game, the Vikes’ Hayden Gibson threw a 29-yard TD pass to Hunter Jones to tie it. However, the PAT was wide and overtime was needed.

In the extra session, Winfield’s Brock Rolo scored on an 8-yard run on second down. The try for two failed when the snap was fumbled.

The Bullpups, though, managed only a two-yard run, then three incompletions as the Vikings came away with the win.

Jace Kinnamon scored the only MHS touchdown on a 9-yard run. The try for 2 failed.

Kinnamon had an interception in the game and Chandler Wiard had a couple of tremendous receptions.

Winfield controlled the game with a powerful running game behind a strong offensive line, but MHS time and again kept the Vikings at bay.

The Bullpups play a rare Tuesday game next week when they host Abilene.
