It was a busy day for McPherson Middle School’s volleyball teams here on Monday as they hosted powerful Maize South.

Here is a summary:

• 8th Grade A •

The Bullpups came up on the short end, 19-25, 18-25.

“We had the lead 11-5 in the first set, but got stuck in a couple of serve receive rotations,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “The girls were down in the second set and managed to make it a game again by playing together and being aggressive on serving. Overall, we had better serving than last week, including five aces by Josie Strathman. Our libero, Ariana Potter, led us in digs.”

MMS is now 4-15.

• 8th Grade B •

The Bullpups lost 11-25, 14-25.

“Maize South had very good serving, therefore we struggled from the beginning with passing,” MMS coach Aimee McDaniel said. “Once the team struggled with passing, then they struggled with communication. However, I was proud of the girls for coming back strong mentally with the second set.”

MMS is now 6-12.

• 7th Grade A •

Maize South won a pair of 25-14 verdicts.

“We had one girl out sick today, so we had to adjust to a new lineup with two girls playing different positions,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “They handled it very well. With the exception of some missed serves and too many dropped balls, the girls did great. There were several times we had a good rally, we just came up on the wrong end. Maize South is a great team.”

The Bullpups are 10-9 on the season.

• 7th Grade B •

The bright spot of the day, the Bullpups won in three sets 17-25, 25-18, 15-12 to improve to a sparkling 17-3.

“We started out a little rocky today and had some bad passes and missed serves at critical moments,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “After the first set, we calmed down and started playing together. Ashtyn Heim had some great serves and Kenzee Godwin was great at the net. All of the girls played really well and I am so proud of how my girls finished today. They never gave up and came out on top. They should be extremely proud of themselves.”

The Bullpups host Goddard Eisenhower on Thursday.
