McPherson’s seventh-grade football team completed a perfect 7-0 season here Thursday by outlasting Valley Center, 20-14.
The record was even more impressive because the schedule included schools all bigger than the Bullpups as this was their first year in the Pioneer League and they were crowned champions.
Aaron Powell scored two touchdowns and he added had a 2-pointer. Max Alexander also scored.
The Bullpups prevailed in spite of themselves as they turned it over five times, but their defense would simply not allow them to lose as it came up with four turnovers of its own.
“Our defense was very strong throughout the game and made a couple of stops late in the game to get the ball back and run out the clock,” MMS coach Brandon Labertew said.
Powell and Dylan Rinker came up with fumble recoveries, while Adam Elliott and EJ Hein had interceptions, with Hein’s sealing the deal.
“I am very proud of this team,” Labertew said. “They worked hard throughout the season and were very coachable. They are a great group of kids. Thanks to all the parents and fans for their support.”
