Tremendous day for MHS harriers

EL DORADO — McPherson High’s cross country team is perhaps peaking at the right time.

The Bullpups waited until Thursday’s league meet for their best day of the year, as the boys took second place and the girls third, while the girls’ JV took first and the boys were second.

“The boys, as a team, ran with a fire today that I haven't really seen from them this season. It was fun to watch,” MHS coach Gentry Nixon said. “We had anticipated being in the Top 2 or 3 on both the girls' and boys' side, and I'm really pleased that they lived up to those expectations. It gives me a lot of confidence in both teams moving into regionals next weekend. I feel like both teams have a good shot at competing at state.”

For the boys, Chris Kirchner led the way with an 8th-place finish, while Spencer Steinert (11th), Paxton Leaf (12th), Isaiah Moyer (16th) and Tyler Timson (17th) ran in a pack as they all cracked the Top 20.

MaryAnne Wurm led the girls as she was 4th, while Katie Bahr cracked the Top 15 by taking 12th.

The girls’ JV race produced a 1-2-3 Bullpup finish (Kenzie Becker, J’anae Spaich and Hannah Dossett), while Kamryn Collins (6th) and Bailey Holton (9th) made the Top 10.

Cole Kretzer (2nd) led the JV boys to their runner-up finish.
