NEWTON — McPherson’s eighth-grade volleyball team wrapped up its season on Saturday by going 1-2 in the Pioneer League Tournament.
The result left MMS with a 6-17 final record.
Both of the losses were three-setters — 10-25, 25-21, 13-15 to Salina South and 25-23, 17-25, 11-15 to Salina Lakewood.
The victory came against Derby North (25-17, 25-12).
“Although today didn't go as we had hoped, the girls really did improve throughout the season and were playing their best volleyball the last week of the season,” MMS coach Jacque Gehr said. “After coming out flat against South in the first set, we rallied to win the second and lost a close third set. We lost another close three-set match against Lakewood before ending our season on a positive note with a win against Derby North.”
It was a season of near-misses for the Bullpups, who lost a passel of three-setters that if they had gone the other way, would perhaps have given them a winning season.
“This season had its challenges for everyone, but I enjoyed these girls tremendously and each of them have been enjoyable to coach,” Gehrt said. “I look forward to watching them improve over the course of their high school playing years. They have high potential if they stick together and keep working as a team.”
A-team members were Shelby Bontrager, Anna Nason, Lakyn Schieferceke, Andrea Sweat, Josie Strahman, Cassis Cooks, Peyton Johnson and Ariana Potter.
