McPherson Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team was the second-best in the Pioneer League after Saturday’s finale at the Roundhouse.

Only Newton stood in the way of the Bullpups winning the title, as it knocked off MMS 25-17, 25 in the championship match.

MMS had won its first four matches of the day. In pool play, it handled Derby (25-11, 25-5), Derby North (25-18, 27-25) and Salina Lakewood (25-13, 19-25, 19-17).

In the semifinals, the Bullpups toppled Hutchinson in straight sets (26-24, 25-19) to set up the match with Newton.

“I am so incredibly proud of the fight and determination the girls showed today,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We had several close sets prior to the championship game and each time they were able to pull together as a team. To end with the loss was tough for them, but they have a lot to be proud of. These girls improved so much throughout the season, and were fun to coach.”

MMS finished the season with a 15-10 record.
