Smoky Valley’s fifth-ranked volleyball team is the top seed for the Class 4A Division II sub-state being hosted Saturday by Nickerson.
The Vikings are 25-10 and play Nickerson (9-25) at 2 p.m. Next up is Pratt (20-15) and Haven (11-22) at 3 p.m., with the finals at 4 p.m.
Hesston is in a brutal Class 3A sub-state at Gypsum.
The Swathers (26-10) play Trinity Catholic (22-14) at 3 p.m. It then would play the winner of Marion (33-3) and Halstead (10-26) in the semifinals.
Southeast of Saline (32-3) and Council Grove (29-6) are the favorites on the other side of the bracket.
Elyria Christian School has a great chance to make state in its Class 1A Division II sub-state at Altoona. Even though the Eagles are 9-19, they are the top seed. Burrton (7-24) is the No. 2 seed while also in the field are Hartford (6-23), Colony Crest (5-25) and Altoona-Midway (1-30). Elyria received a first-round bye.
Pairings for McPherson High and the four other area schools were posted on Wednesday. The four area schools — Canton-Galva, Inman, Little River and Moundridge — are housed in the same sub-state at Moundridge, where Central Plains and Hillsboro are heavily favored to make the finals. McPherson plays Hays in the Buhler sub-state, with Abilene taking on Buhler. MHS, Hays and Buhler are ranked in the Top 5.
