BUHLER — “Why not us?”

Why not us, indeed.

That was McPherson High volleyball coach Christy Doile’s battle cry before Saturday’s Class 4A Sub-State Tournament that included three of the top five ranked teams in Class 4A Division I.

But all that fret, all that worry, dissolved when the Bullpups took out No. 5-ranked Hays (25-16, 25-16) and No. 3 Abilene (25-22, 25-17) to earn a sixth straight trip to state.

After all the considerable smoke cleared on Saturday at the other sub-states, the Bullpups find themselves as the No. 1 seed next week at Salina with a 34-7 record and in a pool that doesn’t include No. 1 Miege or longtime power and No. 4-ranked Louisburg.

The Bullpups will play the morning session on Friday at the Bicentennial Center. They open against Wellington (19-17) at 8:30, play Andale (28-13) at 10:30 and then have a break before closing against Tonganoxie (27-11) at 1:30.

Semifinal matches begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Bullpups rode the hot hands of Megan Pedersen (24 kills) and Magan Alexander (19) for their two wins, while Brooke Schrag had perhaps her best day of the year with 30 assists. Addie Simon led in digs with 10, while Pedersen was tops in blocks with three.

By winning the sub-state, the Bullpups eliminated two of the best teams in 4A Division I throughout the year. Because of the way the sub-state brackets unfolded, other state powers also were ousted including ranked teams Basehor-Linwood (No. 6), Circle (No. 7), Rose Hill (No. 9) and DeSoto (No. 10). That means six teams ranked in the final Top 10 by the KVA last week will be in Salina, but only as spectators.
