HESSTON — The Hesston Swathers are going to have to pull at least one upset on Friday if they’re to advance to the Class 3A State Volleyball Final Four.

The Swathers enter as the No. 5 seed at Emporia with a 29-10 record.

They play 31-8 Wellsville in their 9:30 a.m. opener and come right back to play No. 1-ranked and tourney favorite Silver Lake (38-2) at 10:30. The last match is at 12:30 against league foe Sterling (21-16).

More than likely, if form holds true, the Swathers’ very first match of the day could determine their fate.

On the other side of the bracket, teams include Garden Plain (38-2), Riley County (22-16), Beloit (33-4) and Neodsha (25-12).

Saturday’s semifinals are set for 10 a.m.

The Swathers survived arguably the toughest of all the 3A sub-states, knocking off Southeast of Saline on its home court of Gypsum in a thrilling championship match. Top seed Marion had been stunned by No. 8 Halstead in the opener.

The Swathers of coach Jason Peters have a balanced team, led by hitters Cami Richardson and Kailey Jo Ince, and the versatile Alaina Dunlavy, who had 89 assists and 32 digs last week in the sub-state. Kylie Brenneman, Mia Loganbill and Katie Thrasher are other key Swathers.
